[Review] Snow White and the Huntsman

This version Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs stayed true to the key events in the fairy tale. There were the evil queen, the seven dwarfs, the prince charming, the poisoned apple, and the kiss to break the spell. 


But this time, it is in a darker setting... complete with medieval wars and peasant lifestyle. A new character is also added: The Huntsman. 


The plot centers on Snow White (played by Kristen Stewart). The movie does great by showing her early childhood days. Snow White's mother died of an illness and the king was full of sorrow. Then, taking advantage of the king's weakness, an army came to conquer the land. With it came the arrival of the Evil Queen, named Ravenna (played by Charlize Theron). Of course, this narcissistic queen wants to be the only beautiful one, so she wanted to kill Snow White. But our heroine escaped to the dark forest, and Ravenna hired the Huntsman (played by Chris Hemsworth) to kill her. However, our Huntsman had a change of heart and decided to help Snow White against the Evil Queen.


Well, this movie has a lot of chasing and running scenes. It gets boring at some point. Oh man! This movie is such a drag! Slow transitions from one scene to another happened at the first hour. Then it goes fast at the last minute. Character development was limited to Snow White and the Evil Queen. Some lines were inaudible as well. Or maybe that springs from the fact that I have difficulty understanding British accent. I admire the fact that the costumes were patterned after the Disney version and only the colors were altered. Special effects were okay, but could use some work. The outstanding one was the Magic Mirror Mirror! You'd be surprised! Sound effects were of common war themes. 


As for the actors, some outshone over the others. My admiration goes to Charlize Theron! She breathed life to the Evil Queen. All the hidden sorrow, anxiousness, and desperation could be seen in her eyes. And oh! I like the sudden gush of rage. Chris Hemsworth did well as the Huntsman. He is the perfect macho man with the swords and knives and daggers! However, when if comes to our heroine, Kristen Stewart falls short of becoming Snow White. Her acting and reactions... joy, sorrow, pain, determination... is reminiscent of Bella Swan. Even the audience who were watching with me noticed that. The way her eyes looked and her mannerisms are still of Bella Swan. 


So what did I learn at the end of the film? I am still thinking about it as of writing. Maybe I just watched it to kill time. The story didn't show a sweet, loving, kind, feminine, and strong-willed Snow White. Let me get this straight. I don't like the fact that I spend P200 on this film. I didn't watch Snow White and The Huntsman. It was more like Bella Swan and the Huntsman.
