Knowing The Gangnam Style

So there goes a time when everybody is talking about something popular and here I am not knowing anything about it. I am the type of person that does not like something just because it is popular. It has to have substance and meaning. Unfortunately, the philosophical ones do not get the attention of the masses.

My Facebook and Twitter timeline, as well as my Google Reader feed is bombarded with the Gangnam Style. Usually, I just scroll down and shrug it off. It wasn't until yesterday that the Gangnam Style played on the radio and my colleague asked me how to do the dance steps. Well, all I could say was... "Gee, it's my first time to ever hear it and I have never watched the music video".

Boom. It left me challenged to know more about this craze that took the whole world. If ever I won't like it, at least I have some information to use as a topic starter when talking to people. Besides even the anime and cosplay community is talking about it.

So what is the Gangnam Style? Here is the viral video for those who haven't seen it yet:

The Gangnam Style is just a dance craze at the back of my head. Watching the video alone couldn't convince me to like it. So I delved in deeper to the meaning of the song. And I came upon this interesting article by Onsemiro (http://mydearkorea.blogspot.com) The complete link to the article is http://mydearkorea.blogspot.com/2012/08/korean-music-psys-gangnam-style-and.html

Onsemiro's blog opened my eyes beyond the dance steps of the Gangnam Style. According to her, Gangnam is a place in Korea where in riches thrive. It is, from what I understood, the central business district in Seoul. People there are very opulent and others would try to live the Gangnam style of life by using and showing off material things.

The song Gangnam Style by Psy is a satire of the Gangnam district. Now that caught my attention. Finally, a meaning behind the crazy dance routine. Psy tells everybody the stupidity of materialism through his song. Onsemiro even analyzes the plot of the video and I suggest you read it.

I also researched on the lyrics. Knowing what the song is about made me appreciate it even more. Here is a video with English subtitles by Onsemiro.

Now I like the Gangnam Style. A popular video with underlying philosophy is rare. Sadly, Psy has to present his song in a stupid manner for the world to appreciate. However, I'm still not comfortable with the dance routine. It is still pretty stupid for my taste, but I guess that is the whole point of the song, eh?
