[Review] Magnum Gold?!
Is Magnum Gold?! as good as gold?
Magnum Gold?! (Yep that is the proper noun: Magnum Gold with a double punctuation) is the latest offering from the existing Magnum Ice Cream Flavors available in the Philippines. It was launched just this February 2014.
The color scheme of the packaging matches the Royal theme, and I do like the Steampunk inspired logo which is very well done. It reminds you of the golden opulence that is associated with royals.
The description officially says:
The ice cream bar is covered with gold-colored chocolate, and underneath is another layer of brown Belgian chocolate. It does not glitter like gold, but it will do.
First bite? It was... okay. It's not bad. It also reminded me of a familiar flavor. It was your ordinary ice cream. The seasalt caramel sauce is a rare feature, though. There's not a lot of ice cream with it. However, it only gave a hint to the overall flavor, unlike the Salted Caramel Sundae in McDonald's were the salty sweetness was more prominent. By the way, the swirl effect is nice to look at.
To be fair, I was not able to fully appreciate Magnum Gold?! because it has a vanilla core. I do have a sweet tooth, and I really do love sweets. However, this Magnum flavor just fell short on the sweetness part. And the familiar flavor I was talking about? It tasted like Toblerone White Chocolate. I guess the coating is white chocolate covered in yellow.
Hmmm... I might have expected a lot from this product, only to end up being disappointed. Overly hyped products usually tell more than what they really are. They raise your expectations but rarely do they deliver.
My favorite Magnum flavor so far is Chocolate Truffle, and if you ask me... it feels closer to the taste of opulent gold. It is so heavenly! And If you desire a truly royal taste, then Chocolate Truffle would fit that role much better than Magnum Gold?!
